Cell-Fate Decisions in the Immune System

DFG: SFB 1054 - Integrated Research Training Group

Modern immunology integrates diverse disciplines such as molecular genetics, biochemistry and clinical medicine. Particular aspects of the immune system are being dissected with ever increasing detail, leading to a growing specialization of individual researchers. However, an integrated view of cell fate decisions in the immune system - the subject of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1054 - can only be obtained if the complex interplay of cellular players, soluble factors and microenvironmental cues is taken into consideration. By providing disciplinary- and interdisciplinary training, this Integrated Research Training Group aims to address the need for a holistic approach to immune biology. It offers structured activities such as a lecture series, a journal club and transferable skills training. In addition, individualized training activities are fostered, for instance through travel grants, in order to acquire know-how complementary to the expertise within the SFB 1054. In sum, this Integrated Research Training Group intends to provide excellent doctoral candidates with key qualifications that are considered not only crucial for the success of the SFB 1054, but will also support a future career in life sciences.
