Job Profile: Coordinator of a Doctoral Program

In the course of the development of the doctoral system, structured doctoral programs have become increasingly important and their numbers have increased considerably in recent years. This has also been accompanied by new positions being created for research managers who are responsible for the coordination of doctoral programs.

Although the field of research management is a growing and increasingly established occupation, thus far there are few descriptions of the range of job profiles within the field. This also applies to the coordinators of doctoral programs whose qualifications and skills have not yet been defined in a job profile.

For this reason, in July 2013 the GraduateCenterLMU invited a group of LMU coordinators to a workshop where, with the help of an external moderator, an initial survey was conducted of the activities of coordinators. From this group of workshop participants, a working group was formed to address the job profile description and, amongst others, to conduct an online survey amongst coordinators in December 2013/January 2014 to gather further information on the job profile. The results of the survey and the draft of the job profile were presented and discussed at a meeting of the coordinators in July 2014. Subsequently the working group published the following paper to make the results available to all interested parties.
