Distant Worlds: Munich Graduate School for Ancient Studies
Excellence Initiative: Graduate School 1039
The Graduate School "Distant Worlds" aims to investigate the underlying structures of ancient cultures by means of an innovative concept to promote junior research in Ancient Studies. This concept combines a flexible teaching program with the organizational framework of an interdisciplinary research training group. Several faculties at the LMU, as well as the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and various Munich museums and collections are involved in the Graduate School.
In seven research groups led by experienced postdoctoral researchers, the doctoral candidates uncover the axiomatic deep structures of ancient cultures. The postdoctoral researchers use their own experience of academic writing to give the doctoral candidates practical support.
In addition, individual mentoring by a group of professors ensures that the doctoral candidates receive excellent specialist supervision. These conditions not only enable the doctoral candidates to produce a dissertation on an independent topic within the field of Ancient Studies; the opportunity to perform independent research in a team and the close contact to research institutes outside the university also open up other professional fields to the doctoral candidates.
